New Orleans is a vibrant city with an incredibly rich history! With various businesses and attractions experiencing COVID-19 related closures across the United States, you may be wondering what’s currently open in the city for your next trip. No worries – here are 10 must-see attractions and places to visit that are open to the public in fall 2021.
1. Cruise On A Steamboat
Take a cruise on a classic steamboat! These tours usually feature Steamboat NATCHEZ. NATCHEZ is currently out of commission, however, so tours are instead using her sister ship CITY. For tours that are exclusively on the steamboat, proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test is not required. For tours that involve going to restaurants or bars, proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test is needed for entry to many of the establishments.
2. Stop By The Mardi Gras Museum Of Costumes And Culture
Learn more about the history of Mardi Gras and see a wide variety of costumes up close with a visit here! This museum also features an interactive component including a dress-up area where you can try some of the costumes on. This is a fairly small museum, however, it’s still sure to make for a fun stop.
3. Visit Audubon Zoo
Audubon Zoo, located on Magazine Street, is currently open to the public! See all sorts of furry, scaly, and feathered animals with a trip to this iconic zoo. The zoo is currently requiring timed reservations for all visitors. Additionally, guests will need to wear face masks and provide proof of vaccination/negative COVID test to enter buildings.
4. Ride A Street Car
Here’s a unique and fun option: a ride on the oldest continuously operating streetcar ride in the world! Whether you’re looking to head to a specific destination or just take a ride around the city, the historical St. Charles line will be a fun addition to any trip!
5. Visit The St. Louis Cathedral
This gorgeous cathedral is actually the oldest in North America! Featuring stunning 18th-century architecture, St. Louis Cathedral’s doors are currently open to the public. You can also attend a church service at the cathedral.
6. Check Out The New Orleans Museum Of Art
Take in some beautiful pieces of art by visiting the New Orleans Museum of Art! The museum features a wide variety of art pieces ranging from sculptures to paintings. Both the museum and the adjoining sculpture garden are currently open to the public. Face masks are required indoors. Additionally, proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within the past 72 hours is needed for entering buildings.
7. Visit A Historic House
Check out a historic home with a visit to Longue Vue House and Gardens. You can look forward to not only traversing the grounds but also learning all about the history of the house as well as some about the surrounding area. Masks are currently required indoors regardless of whether or not guests are vaccinated. Additionally, tour groups are currently smaller and all guests are required to register for tours ahead of time.
8. Learn About The City At The Historic New Orleans Collection
Take your knowledge of New Orleans to the next level with a visit to the Historic New Orleans Collection! This museum is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the city. Tickets are free, however, proof of Covid vaccination or negative test within the past 72 hours is needed for entry.
9. Explore Frenchmen Street
If you’re looking for live music as well as pubs, head over to Frenchman Street. Frenchman Street may not be quite as famous as Bourbon Street, however, this actually works to its advantage – it isn’t quite as touristy as Bourbon Street and has venues that feature local artists. This makes it a great way to see the authentic side of the city!
10. Stop By The Nola Historical Voodoo Museum
A visit to the NOLA Historical Voodoo Museum is the perfect way to add a spooky and memorable twist to your trip! This small museum features all manner of relics and exhibits showcasing the history of Voodoo in New Orleans.
