Winter can be the perfect time for a couples retreat – what’s more romantic than cuddling by a fire with some hot cocoa or cider, after all? If you’re looking to plan a romantic getaway on the east coast of the United States this winter, this list should help you get started. Here are our 10 suggestions for towns that are perfect for a couples vacation, as well as some suggestions for lodging and date ideas! 

1. Albany, New York

If you’re looking to explore a beautiful city, consider heading over Albany. This city in New York offers a ton of great potential dates. Art lovers will want to check out New York State Museum or catch a show at the Palace Theatre. For lodging, consider staying at Rennaissance Albany Hotel. 


2. Saratoga Springs, New York 

Saratoga Springs is another great place for couples who enjoy winter sports such as cross country skiing and ice skating. The town also offers some unique attractions such as the trend of “ice bars” – bars that feature intricate, stunning ice sculptures and are often even partially carved from ice themselves. While the plans for 2021 ice bars haven’t been announced yet, you can check out the bars from 2020 here to get an idea of this fun trend!

Deep Creek Lake is the perfect remote, serene winter retreat. A popular place for both cross country and downhill skiing, Deep Creek Lake is also home to many winter hiking trails. This is a great choice for couples who love nature, or for those looking to get away from the distractions of the modern world to focus on each other.

Located near Acadia National Park, which features some stunning displays of autumn leaves, fall is one of the most popular times to visit this town. A winter trip can be just as fulfilling, however. Not only can you look forward to fewer crowds – creating an even more romantic atmosphere, there’s also no shortage of romantic things to do in this town. If you're up for some adventure, you could also go cross-country skiing in Acadia National Park.

This island is accessible via the Overseas Highway, you can look forward to enjoying some sun with your significant other, lounging by the beach, or getting adventurous with activities such as snorkeling.

Head over to Williamsburg, Virginia for a peaceful winter retreat and a slice of American history! This colonial town features several museums and historical sites, but that’s not all it has to offer! For some date ideas, you may want to check out Williamsburg Winery, which offers wine tastings. Ice skating at  Liberty Ice Pavilion – opening at the end of November – is another fun activity this town offers!

The Hamptons might be best known as a luxurious summertime retreat, but a winter visit can prove worthwhile too. A great way to avoid some of the heavier crowds, there’s still plenty to do in the Hamptons in the colder months. Consider going on a lighthouse tour, go wine tasting, or decorate gingerbread houses at Gingerbread University.

Boston is a great city to visit in the winter because it offers the perfect balance of big-city energy with a historic, artsy feel. There's no shortage of unique date ideas in this city – for example, winter is an especially good time to check out museums, such as the Museum of Science.

9. Stowe, Vermont 

This cozy town is perfect for curling up by the fire or embarking on outdoor adventures such as downhill skiing. Having been called one of the best ski towns in America, a trip here is guaranteed to not disappoint. If skiing isn’t exactly up your lane, no worries – you can also look forward to exploring the town itself, which features tons of shops, eateries, and places to grab a great drink.
