Adventure travel seekers will be getting out this summer in the United States. There are numerous outdoor activities that fall into the adventure category. Some adventure travelers pursue high adrenaline, thrill seeking activities such as whitewater rafting or mountain climbing. Other adventure travelers prefer to spend time with nature and wildlife and have a more subdued experience. The following is a list of the best US adventure destinations.

Have a Mountain Adventure in the Adirondacks

This mountain range is a few hours north of New York City and is one of New York state’s outdoor playgrounds. This region has plenty of adventures waiting on the water and the land. On the water, guests can fish, paddleboard, whitewater rafting, swimming and boating. Land dwellers will have a great time birding, biking, playing golf, hiking and even motorcycling. The more daring visitors can tackle climbing one of the many cliffs located here. Numerous camp sites and lodging options are available in the region.

Go Birdwatching at Coastal Georgia Wildlife Refuges

Wildlife enthusiasts will love spending time at one of these refuges along the Georgia coast. In this forest and marshland there are five wildlife refuges-Wolf Island, Blackbeard Island, Harris Neck, Reynolds and Wassaw. Visitors can rent a two person kayak and float down the waterways of the refuges and see the various wildlife including birds and waterfowl. The area also has many free beaches if you just want sun and a swim. There are many campgrounds and low cost lodging here for guest accommodation.

Jackson Hole is situated in the wilderness of Wyoming located a few miles from Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. This beautiful country is a mecca for outdoor adventures including horseback riding, hiking, fishing and river rafting. In the winter months, many come to Jackson Hole for skiing and snowboarding. At Jackson Hole, guests can book a wildlife tour to see the moose, elk, coyotes, bald eagles and so much more. When your adventure is through for the day, tourists can relax and dine at one of the many great restaurants and bars in Jackson Hole, as well as a multitude of accommodation options.

Explore the Canyons and Caves at Zion National Park

Utah’s first national park is a favorite destination for adventure travelers. Visitors love backpacking and day hiking through the narrows, canyons and caves of this beautiful spot. Other adventures available here include rock climbing and floating a kayak on the river. The wildlife viewed here include mule deer, gray fox, bighorn sheep,  mountain lion and bobcats. A large array of birds including the California Condor, the Mexican spotted owl and bald eagle. There are three campgrounds in the park for guests that wish to stay there.

Experience Adventure at the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is one of the most popular adventure destinations in the United States. The Grand Canyon receives approximately six million visitors a year. The South rim is popular with hikers walking Bright Angel Trail and tourists taking in the natural beauty of the canyon. Campsites are available on both the North and South rims of the canyon. Besides hiking and river rafting, biking, backpacking and ranger programs are also available at the canyon. One great adventure here is the famous mule ride down the canyon. If you want the most spectacular view of the canyon, take a helicopter tour to see the mile deep, 18 mile wide natural wonder. For a special experience, walk the Trail of Time and learn all about the geologic timeline of the Grand Canyon.

Have a Tropical Adventure on Maui

The island of Maui is more than just a tropical paradise, it is a haven for adventure travelers. In addition to island water adventures such as swimming, snorkeling, and surfing, there are tins of activities to do on the land as well. Waihee Ridge Trail has one of the best views of the West Maui Mountains when walking the four mile trail. The courageous can ride their bike down the dormant volcano Haleakala, or hike at its crater. Other adventures available on Maui are ziplining, horseback riding, and off road tours. If you want to see an awesome bird’s eye view of the island, consider taking a helicopter tour and prepared to be awed.
