Love of travel is something that every generation shares, but not all age groups value the same experiences during their travels. As a result, there is no definitive “Top Destination” that will appeal to every age group. However, a recent study has found some of the top destinations in the world depending on how old you are, and the results may surprise you. Below, we've listed the top city revealed for each age group and each group's preferences.

Baby Boomers

According to Holidu, research has shown that out of every generation, Baby Boomers spend the most money on food. Likewise, research also found that Baby Boomers value the great outdoors. Bearing this in mind, the study focused on destinations with a high number of Michelin Guide restaurants and cities with a significant variety of outdoor spaces to explore. Another factor considered was which cities had the most noteworthy green spaces.

Top City For Baby Boomers: Singapore

Singapore took the number one spot as the best city in the world for Baby Boomers. The capital of the same-named nation is a great destination for Baby Boomers, as it has 46.5% of its land allotted for green spaces. This is excellent for a generation that values the outdoors despite the city's reputation as a busy metropolis.

Singapore is home to 249 Michelin Guide restaurants, making it an excellent choice for Baby Boomers. Nearly one in five of these restaurants hold at least one Michelin star, and three even have the Michelin 3-star designation.

Generation-X

According to the study, Gen-X enjoys checking out historical sites and museums, and nearly half prefer to travel with their own rental vehicle while on vacation. Using these insights, the study looked at cities that had roads that were easy to drive on, a high number of museums, and the most activities with a 5-star rating.

Top City For Gen-X: Tokyo

Sensoji Temple in Asakusa Tokyo Japan

Tokyo came out as the best city for Gen-X. One of the biggest reasons Tokyo beat other cities for Gen-X preferences was the fact that Tokyo is home to over 900 museums! Also, Tokyo had 963 different things to do on TripAdvisor that had a 5-star designation. For traveling between all the activities on offer, the road quality in Japan is top notch, with a 6.1 out of 7 rating. For Gen-X'ers that fit the description above, Tokyo is the perfect destination.

Millennials

Millennials grew up right along with the emergence of social media. As a result, the study found that about 7/10 of Millennials use Instagram at least once per week. Millennials have started families of their own, and over half have kids who still live at home. Regarding travel preferences, Millennials base much of their travel around good drinks and food.

Top City For Millennials: Paris

Given the parameters above, it's no surprise that Paris took the top spot for Millennials. Paris is one of the most Instagrammed destinations in the world, with over 137 million hashtags on the platform. Likewise, Paris is a foodie paradise, and wine is often cheaper than the cost of water in some areas. For millennials traveling with children in tow, Paris ranked highly, especially with its close proximity to Disneyland Paris.

Generation-Z

Gen-Z is the first generation to grow up fully plugged into the internet and social media. As a result, 60% are active users of the popular social media app TikTok. Gen-Z tends to look for once-in-a-lifetime experiences when it comes to travel and enjoy immersing themselves in cultural experiences. When it comes to budgeting, over 66% of Gen-Z say that price is an important factor when traveling. Using these findings, the study compared destinations with the most TikTok views, the most amount of World Heritage Sites, and the best value for purchasing a beer and meal.

Top City For Gen-Z: Istanbul

Galata Tower In Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul is the top destination for Generation-Z travelers, with its massive 37.5 billion TikTok views being one of the primary reasons. Istanbul ranked higher on TikTok than other tourism behemoths like London, Paris, and Dubai. Further separating itself from these other cities, Istanbul is much more affordable, with a beer and a meal only averaging about $7.

As a boomer born in 1955 I would never consider Singapore as a destination except as a final spot to visit after Thailand and Malaysia.

Millenials - And I certainly don't use Instagram (and not really like social media in general). I lived in Paris for 10 years. Really bad choice. It's super grey, super depressed, full of stress and anger, super noisy and highly polluted, not clean at all, extremely expensive, pretty insecure (contrary to what foreigners often believe), subway and trains are a disaster (very dirty, very noisy, very insecure)...
