Digital nomads are always on the hunt for the next best place to call home – even if that's only for 30 days, a few months, or multiple years.
There may be no better dream destination than Thailand. This fascinating country is cheap, exotic, cultural, and simply unparalleled to any other nation.
We all know Bangkok is, at the very least, one of the better gateways to dip your toes into digital nomadism, but there is so much more than meets the eye to Thailand than this bustling concrete jungle.
Whether it's Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, or one of the country's many stunning islands, digital nomads have a perpetual playground at their fingertips.
While we're all familiar with the big names of Thailand, the lesser known province of Khon Kaen is ready to make a name for itself in the world of remote workers and will undoubtedly become the newest digital nomad hotspot.
Thailand's Buzzing Destination Ready For Digital Nomads
According to Thailand's tourism board, Khon Kaen is one of the fastest-growing regions in the nation.
As such, it's only natural given the landscape of the travel industry that digital nomads will follow suit.
Khon Kaen is both a province and a city, and not to be confusing, but the city itself is surprisingly the 4th largest in Thailand.
The province as a whole has a lot to be desired, but the city is where digital nomads will soon be flocking like moths to a flame.
Set 6 hours from Bangkok and 3 hours from the Laos border, it's safe to say this area of Thailand is off-the-beaten path for most travelers, but that will change in due time.
Tourists are in for a treat as this gorgeous region is home to eye-popping temples, traditional night markets, and Thailand's version of Jurassic Park.
But don't worry, there's no need to ‘hold on to your butts'.
Trendy Cafes And Cheap Long-Term Stays
Khon Kaen may be known across Thailand as the “Dinosaur City” as it's pre-historic past is older than dirt, yet modern-day Khon Kaen is just that – quite modern and equipped for the remote worker craze.
When we think of exploring lesser-known regions of Thailand, the last thing that comes to mind is newness.
Perhaps historic traditional villages would come to mind, but Khon Kaen will rock your socks off and have your jaw on the floor when you find out what you've been missing out on as a digital nomad.
The city is lined with upgraded co-working spaces with the latest bells and whistles, reliable Wi-Fi, and trendy cafes spread throughout the city.
To give a better understanding why Khon Kaen, of all places, is set up this way it's because it's essentially a college town, but there is more than enough room to embrace digital nomads as it's nowhere near the size of Bangkok per se.
Additionally, oftentimes budgeting tops the list when picking a new base for digital nomads and this city exceeds the mark.
Long-term centrally located apartments can be found on Airbnb anywhere from $277 to the low $900's depending on size, location, and amenities.
Thailand Becomes More Welcoming To Tourists
Thailand has long been a favorite destination for expats to save money without sacrificing quality of life.
This surely translates over to digital nomads now, especially since the country is becoming more friendly toward not only this type of traveler, but all travelers in general.
It was announced earlier this week travelers from over 90 nations, including the U.S, can now stay up to 2 months instead of just 30 days.
Furthermore, digital nomads will love the new opportunity to stay up to 5 years with the country's revamped Digital Nomad Visa. (keep in mind you will need to leave and re-enter the country every 180 days)
Per usual, there is some fine print still being sorted out, but enough has been leaked to the point Khon Kaen has declared themselves the next big thing in the digital nomad world.
Details are still being gathered, but the bottom line is Khon Kaen is ready for an influx of visitors with the newly built international terminal making this region easier to reach than ever before.
