Airport security lines can be every traveler’s worst nightmare. Security checkpoints are almost as busy as pre-pandemic levels in the U.S. With holiday travel around the corner and more people fully vaccinated, more people are taking to the skies.
However, this year a number of U.S. airports have started programs that allow travelers to reserve a spot on a TSA line for free.
Here’s how you can skip those tedious security lines.
The New TSA Security Line Initiative
The programs are at four of the busiest airports in the United States:
- Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport have officially launched these initiatives in partnership with the TSA.
Los Angeles International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport are currently in the trial stages for similar programs.
Third-party virtual queuing platforms run the programs. For example, Whyline runs the program in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Newark.
Currently, the 90-day pilot program at Los Angeles International Airport allows travelers flying out of two of its terminals to reserve a TSA time up to three days prior to the flight or in the ticketing area of the airport. The trial program will run from October 2021, 2021 to January 18, 2022.
LAX Spokesperson Health Montgomery said the LAX program intends to “put more of the passenger journey into the hands of our customers,”
“This is another piece of that puzzle where we are making air travel more predictable and less stressful because the last thing you want to do is show up to the airport and really not know how long it's going to take to get through security.”
How Can Travelers Skip Reserve Their Slot
Travelers at Los Angeles International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport can start booking their appointments up to 72 hours before their flight departs.
Once travelers are at these airports, they need to show a QR code and enter designated checkpoint lanes that take them to the front of the general security line.
1. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
- Sign up 72 hours before your flight or when you arrive at the airport at the ticketing level of the terminal
- Choose the airline you’re flying with, the destination, and the flight number along with your name, number of people you’re traveling with, and contact information to save your spot
- Go to your designated checkpoint by looking for the SEA Spot Saver Logo. The spot is available at TSA Checkpoints 3 and 5 (closest to the C, D, and N Gates) or at TSA Checkpoints 2 (closest to the A, B, and S Gates)
- Show airport staff your confirmation of appointment and QR code
2. Los Angeles International Airport
- Sign up 3 days before your flight or when you arrive at the ticketing level of the terminal
- Choose the airline you’re flying with, the destination, and the flight number along with your name, number of people you’re traveling with, and contact information to save your spot
- Go to your assigned checkpoint at your appointment time. The LAX Fastlane pilot is available on the east end of the checkpoint at Terminal 7.
- Show airport staff your confirmation and you’re ready to fly
3. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport
- Sign up for a reservation up to 7 days in advance of your flight
- Limit your reservation to a maximum of 10 people
- Check-in with your airline to ensure they offer a ticket counter in terminal D for local check-in/baggage check at the time of your reservation
- If you check-in from home or remotely and already have your boarding pass with no checked bags and do not require an airline ticket counter, DFW's Skylink train connects ALL 5 terminals
- The fast pass is available from Thursday to Monday's (subject to change)
4. Newark Liberty International Airport
- Sign up in advance up to 72 hours before your flight from Terminal A or when you arrive at Newark Airport
- Select the airline you're flying with, destination, and flight number along with your name, number of people in your party, and contact information.
- Go to your assigned checkpoint and look for the VirtuaLine queue logo.
- Show airport staff your QR code, and you're ready to go through the screening
