Whether you’re a surfer, a nature lover or simply looking to spread your wings and see more of the world, Australia ticks every box. From big cities to beach towns, the outback to the ocean, there’s more than enough to keep you entertained – and after two long years of border closures as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Australia is finally reopening to travelers. Here are all the latest 2022 COVID-19 entry requirements for Australia all travelers need to know before booking their trip.

Entry Requirements For Countries Permitted to Visit Australia For Tourism

COVID-19 Testing Entry Requirements 

A negative COVID-19 test result is required for travelling to Australia. This can be in the form of either a negative COVID-19 PCR or other Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) test taken within 3 days before departure, or a medical certificate as proof of a negative Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) – taken under medical supervision – within 24 hours before departure. Quarantine Entry Requirements


Quarantine rules for vaccinated travelers differ from state to state:

New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Australian Capital Territory and South Australia – travelers must head straight to their accommodation after landing to take a RAT, and must self-isolate until they have a negative result 

Western Australia – 7 days of self-quarantine in a suitable premises 

Tasmania, Northern Territory – no quarantine requirement

Health Form

All travellers to Australia – including Australian citizens and permanent residents – must complete an Digital Passenger Declaration online at least 72 hours prior to departure. The form will ask travelers to provide your contact details in Australia, flight information, health status and requirements during quarantine.

COVID-19 Travel Insurance Entry Requirements

Australia does not have a mandatory travel insurance policy like some destinations around the world do. However, it is recommended that travelers always purchase a strong travel insurance policy prior to traveling to ensure that they are protected when abroad and to provide peace of mind. 

COVID-19 Health Requirements While in Australia

Some states in Australia, such as New South Wales and Victoria, have been easing Covid-19 restrictions in recent weeks, though the indoor mask mandate still remains for now. Rules differ depending on the state or territory, and so travelers so make sure they research the local health restrictions before visiting. 

COVID-19 Vaccine Entry Requirements


In order to enter Australia, foreign travelers must be fully vaccinated with a primary course of a vaccine approved or recognised by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The list of approved vaccines is as follows: AstraZeneca Vaxzevria, AstraZeneca Covishield, Pfizer/Biontech Comirnaty, Moderna Spikevax or Takeda, Sinovac Coronavac, Bharat Biotech Covaxin, Sinopharm BBIBP-CorV (for people under 60 years of age on arrival in Australia), Gamaleya Research Institute Sputnik, Novavax/Biocelect Nuvaxovid and Johnson & Johnson/ Janssen-Cilag COVID Vaccine.


Travelers will need to present a vaccination certificate to airline staff that meets all of the requirements outlined on the Australian Passport Office website. Unvaccinated visa holders will still need to be in an exempt category or hold an individual travel exemption to enter Australia. 

Visa Entry Requirements For Australia During COVID-19


Travelers from the US can apply for the Electronic Travel Authority to get a visa to enter Australia on their mobile device by downloading the Australian ETA app for free. Unvaccinated travelers will need to apply for a travel exemption. 


Australia Covid-19 Entry Requirements:

  • Apply for the relevant visa type
  • Ensure you have proof of vaccination 
  • Take a PCR or rapid antigen test within the allocated window 
  • Complete the Digital Passenger Declaration 
  • Ensure you have accommodation that meets the quarantine requirements of the state or territory you add visiting
