Italy and Spain Will Not Yet Join Other EU Nations in Removing Entry Requirements

Italy and Spain have both just extended their entry requirements rules for another 30 days, until at least April 30, 2022.

This means that despite Covid-related restrictions being lifted in many parts of Europe over the past few months, Italy and Spain are two EU nations that are not following the trend of easing entry requirements for international travelers – for now, at least.

The nearby countries of Denmark, Poland, and most recently, Latvia, have announced this week that they will be easing all Covid-related entry requirements for incoming travelers.

So if you're planning a trip to Europe this summer or spring, make sure that you're aware of the entry requirements for international travelers country-by-country, as each nation differs greatly in what they require. Here's the latest travel information for both Italy and Spain below.

Italy’s Travel Entry Requirements

Italy’s health minister confirmed this week that the country would be extending its Covid entry rules that were put in place on March 1st until at least the end of April.

The entry restrictions include a required Covid vaccination certificate, an official certificate of recovery, or a negative test result in order to travel to Italy. This applies to travelers from all nations. And every person six years and older must also wear a protective mask on the flight to and from Italy.

Travelers to Italy will also have to fill out the EU Digital Passenger Locator Form prior to travel. You can access the form here.

Italy’s extended restrictions will be in place until April 30th and will be reviewed before they are scheduled to expire.

Local Restrictions In Italy – Information For Travelers

While international travel restrictions have been extended for the month, Italy has eased some of its internal health restrictions for travelers and locals alike.

“Compared to other countries we have chosen a more gradual approach,” Italy’s Health Minister, Roberto Speranza, said on the matter.

As of April 1st, it will no longer be required to show the EU ‘green pass’ to access certain venues and non-essential services. Here's the breakdown:

  • A green pass will no longer be required to access outdoor restaurants and bars, and on local or regional forms of public transportation.
  • The basic green pass will still be required at all other forms of transportation and to access indoor dining, bars, and public outdoor events.

The decision was put in place as Italy removed its pandemic ‘state of emergency’ status on Thursday, March 31st. Face masks will continue to be required in public indoor venues and on public transportation throughout Italy.

You can read more about the travel updates on Italy’s official government website.

These domestic health measures will be reviewed in the month of April before being updated or extended by May 1st.

Spain's Entry Requirements Extended For April

This week, officials in Spain extended the ongoing entry restrictions for travelers another month, until at least April 30th, 2022.

As these restrictions have been extended, this means that all unvaccinated persons from the US, Canada, the UK, and other non-EU/Schengen Area countries will not be able to travel to Spain for non-essential reasons.

Travelers from third countries (the US, Canada, the UK, and other non-EU/Schengen Area countries) who’ve been fully vaccinated against Covid or who carry an official recovery certificate from the previous six months (180 days) can visit Spain for non-essential (tourism) purposes during the month of April.

Those travelers are not required to present a negative Covid test result pre-departure or on arrival. At this time, travelers under the age of 12 are not required to present a Covid vaccination certificate for travel to Spain.

All visitors to Spain will have to fill out an official online passenger form for travel. You can access the form here.

For more information and to access the online form for travel, see Spain’s official government page.

For example - do you know that the covid peak of mid-Jan in 2022 for many countries (Just looked at Spain) - is the same as in 2021? The Northern Hemisphere winter peak. See most clearly on Our World in Data.

Now there are some other factors..but like all influenza before...largely seasonal.
