It’s the most optimistic period of the pandemic for many, but often lost amongst the constant stream of international destinations easing their restrictions for travelers are stories of US destinations taking the same steps.
Las Vegas, the city synonymous both with nights you can’t remember and those you won’t forget, is set to take a giant leap towards normality next month, as the mask mandate is lifted for those who are vaccinated, along with a host of other restrictions being eased. Here’s everything you need to know about what to expect in Vegas next month.
Covid-19 In Vegas – The Story So Far
Covid-19 ripped through Las Vegas at a breakneck speed, causing mass disruption to the lives, livelihoods and travel plans of all those associated with the city. Following their first detected case of Covid-19 on March 5th, 2020, a state of emergency for Nevada was declared a week later, followed by the closure of non-essential businesses in the same month, which saw casinos close their doors.
Nevada’s casinos were allowed to reopen once more on June 4th, along with restaurants, but could only do so with restrictions in place. Such restrictions included social distancing at games machines, masks handed to guests and increased use of hand sanitizer at casino properties. However, these rules are set to change in the coming weeks.
Vegas Back To Normal – What Travelers Should Know
Whilst domestic travel has been picking up in recent weeks, there is still a reluctance amongst many to travel. Whilst that may not be through fear, following the CDC’s announcements, many travelers may only be looking to travel only once things return to normal in order to see a place at its best, not a destination blighted by restrictions. For travelers feeling that way, Las Vegas may be just the ticket.
Following a meeting by lawmakers in the week, it was decided that the Las Vegas strip and its surroundings would fully reopen to vaccinated travelers, taking them back in time to how it used to be in 2019. Governor Steve Sisolak aligned Nevada’s requirements with recent CDC guidance, which declared that fully vaccinated people could stop social distancing and wearing masks both outdoors in crowds and most indoor settings.
The decision comes at a time when most casinos have returned to 100% occupancy and have already been operating without social distancing, under the watchful eye of the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Several casinos have published their changes in restrictions:
- MGM Resorts International has removed mask requirements for vaccinated guests
- Caesars Entertainment (owners of Caesars Palace Las Vegas, Bally's Las Vegas, Harrah's Las Vegas, and Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino) vowed to continue following CDC, state and local guidance, including dropping mask requirement
- Wynn and Encore stated that guests who had their final vaccine dose more than two weeks ago will not need to wear masks on the property, adding that unvaccinated guests should wear a face covering
- The Cosmopolitan stated that fully vaccinated guests will not be required to wear masks both indoors or outdoors, adding that unvaccinated guests must still wear one inside the resort
The change in restrictions may encourage Americans to consider a domestic trip this summer rather than heading abroad, with more and more stateside attractions seemingly returning towards normality.
