Last Updated

2022 has arrived and travel isn't yet back to normal. Omicron has led to increased travel restrictions worldwide. Nevertheless, Latin America's many nations are remaining open throughout Omicron.

In fact, some of the most popular Latin American destinations have no entry restrictions at all. Here are the current entry requirements in popular Latin American destinations:

Brazil

Brazil has pretty stringent entry requirements. Currently, Brazil has banned travelers who are unvaccinated or cannot show valid proof of vaccination. Vaccinated travelers must present a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR or antigen test.

The COVID-19 RT-PCR must be taken 72 hours before the first leg to Brazil, and the antigen test must be taken a maximum of 24 hours before the first leg to Brazil.

Argentina

Argentina was closed for tourism until early November 2021. Currently, Argentina has banned unvaccinated tourists from entering the country because of rising cases of the Omicron variant.

However, all vaccinated travelers must provide a negative COVID-19 PCR or RT-PCR test result taken within a maximum of 72 hours before departure.

Colombia

Colombia has been a popular destination for travelers and digital nomads since the pandemic began. Colombia has banned unvaccinated travelers who don’t hold a Permanent Resident Visa from entering the country as of 14 December 2021.

However, foreign nationals who aren’t holders of a Permanent Resident Visa who’ve started their vaccination scheme or had their final dose less than 14 days before travel, can enter Colombia with proof of a negative PCR test issued no later than 72 hours prior to departure.

Peru

Unlike Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia, Peru hasn’t banned completely unvaccinated tourists from entering. However, unvaccinated travelers must have a negative COVID-19 molecular test issued a maximum of 72 hours before boarding.

Travelers who haven’t been to South Africa or Botswana in the previous 14 days can enter Peru without mandatory quarantine.

Chile

Chile, along with Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia, has banned unvaccinated travelers from entering the country. However, all vaccinated travelers must take a negative COVID-19 PCR test on arrival.

Unvaccinated travelers who are Chilean citizens or international diplomats will have to undergo a mandatory 7-day quarantine.

Mexico

Mexico has become the world’s most visited country since the pandemic began, thanks to its relaxed entry restrictions since the pandemic started. Since the Omicron variant emerged, Mexico—unlike many other nations—hasn’t changed its entry restrictions.

Travelers can currently enter Mexico without testing, quarantine, or vaccination requirements. However, travelers will have to complete a health declaration form before entering.

Belize

Belize, like Mexico, has had relaxed entry restrictions since the pandemic began. Restrictions haven’t changed since Omicron emerged. However, travelers who arrive in Belize at the Philip Goldson International Airport without proof of a negative COVID-19 test must take a test on arrival at their own expense.

However, there are no quarantine restrictions or vaccination restrictions for most travelers. Still, any travelers who’ve entered Belize through Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa or Zimbabwe, must undergo a mandatory 10-day quarantine

Costa Rica

Costa Rica, like Belize and Mexico, has maintained relatively low entry restrictions since the pandemic started. Currently, it’s a superb destination for travelers because Costa Rica doesn't require testing or a mandatory quarantine.

However, travelers must complete the health pass before traveling and have travel insurance covering COVID-19-related expenses if they’re unvaccinated.

Panama

Travelers without a travel history in Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, and South Africa can enter Panama. However, unvaccinated tourists must have a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test result.

Travelers arriving without a valid COVID-19 test will have to take one upon arrival at the airport at their own expense.

Ecuador

Travelers who aren’t fully vaccinated cannot enter Ecuador via air. All travelers aged two and older—regardless of vaccination status—must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test within one day of departure.

Vaccinated travelers who show symptoms of COVID-19 may need to take a rapid COVID-19 antigen test on arrival. If the test is positive, travelers must isolate for 10 days. However, travelers can complete their isolation at a residence of their choice instead of a government hotel.

Although unvaccinated travelers can enter Peru with only a neg covid test, people need to know that they need proof of covid vaccination to board the trains to Machu Picchu.

@Adam, To enter restaurants and shopping malls, do they check vaccine passport in just Lima or everywhere in Peru? How about long distance bus?

Thanks a lot for your information :)

@jacquie whitt, It's also worth mentioning, unvaccinated travellers won't be able to enter restaurants or shopping malls without showing their Vaccine Passport QR code + their ID to confirm it's theirs QR code. Basically you will be treated like leprotic if you're not vaccinated.

Don't forget El Salvador: no entry restrictions there. We will fly to El Salvador next week. I am sure El Salvador will make it to the top 10 destinations very soon. :)

@WJ, El Salvador sounds like one of those countries not poisoned by IMF funding which requires countries to shoot themselves in the foot with all the restrictions.
