New Theme Park To Open In Punta Cana This Year – Here’s What We Know So Far

A new theme park is set to open in the Dominican city of Punta Cana later this year. With the development set to bring rides, shops, eateries, and much more to Punta Cana, its opening could shift the travel landscape in the Caribbean, with other destinations in the area having little in the way to rival a world-class theme park.  

Punta Cana has become extremely popular once more, whilst the Dominican Republic is reestablishing itself as a post-pandemic travel favorite after entry restrictions were eased – and the new theme park will look to capitalize on the sheer number of travelers flocking to the region each year as well as being a major attraction in its own right. Here’s a look at what we know about this exciting new development so far. 

Punta Cana Theme Park – Information For Travelers

For many years now, travelers have flocked to Punta Cana in their droves to sample the destination’s white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and stunning natural surroundings. Whilst these are good enough reasons to visit themselves, by the end of the year travelers are set to have a further reason to pick Punta Cana over other destinations in the region –  and that is the opening of a new theme park. 

Called Katmandu Park Punta Cana, the exciting new development is coming to Punta Cana courtesy of a partnership between the hotel group Meliá Hotels International and Falcon’s Beyond Global. According to the park’s website, visitors to the attraction “will be transported to a place where anything is possible and reality is turned upside-down” – an ambitious claim, yet what we know about the park so far backs it up. 

Marketed as a world-class attraction, the $350 million park promises to deliver cutting-edge, first of their kind rides and attractions to travelers. Whilst little has been revealed about what these attractions actually are – other than the ON!X interactive 5D theater – the park is set to be based on the European theme park of the same name, which boasts a wide number of attractions such as rides, water slides, mini-golf, and a reality-warping funhouse. 

The overall development will consist of two separate phases. The first phase will be the Katmandu theme park, whilst the second phase will see a “premier entertainment, dining, and retail destination,” completed, which will bring world-renowned brands to the site. The first phase is expected to be completed in the Fall of this year, whilst the second phase will be finished in 2023. 

The new theme park will be located on Avenida Alemania, which is close to the tourist complexes and around 16km from Punta Cana airport. It will have the capacity to welcome 4,000 guests per day, with entry set to cost $120 for adults and $85 for children. With few theme parks of the scale located in the Caribbean, it is set to be a major draw for travelers heading to the region.

Speaking about the park, Simon Hirst, director of Parks, Operations, and Expansion for Falcon's Beyond Global, said:

“This park perfectly fills an important gap in the market. Katmandu Punta Cana will be the only theme park of its kind in the Caribbean, satisfying visitors' hunger for world-class entertainment. It will be an absolutely unique experience for visitors to the surrounding hotels, tourists from the United States and residents of Punta Cana alike.”
