New York Issues Travel Advisory As Storm Causes Mass Flight Cancellations

Share The Article

The latest storm to sweep across large parts of the US, Storm Oaklee, has caused mass flight cancellations across various parts of the county, and has even caused New York to issue a warning to “avoid travel.” The winter storm, which struck the southwest on Tuesday, has been making its way across central US states and is now causing problems in the east of the country, with travel bearing the brunt of its effects.

Oaklee is the latest of several storms so far this year that have wreaked havoc across the countries, causing mass disruptions to travel plans, including countless delays and thousands of cancellations. Here’s a closer look at the disruptions that Storm Oaklee has caused thus far, including which airlines have been affected, which airports have suffered the most cancellations, and where travelers stand when it comes to refunds.

Storm Causes Disruptions – What Travelers Should Know

Not for the first time this year, Thursday and Friday saw significant flight cancellations throughout the country, with such disruptions expected to continue well into the weekend as the storm continues to cause issues as it spreads eastwards across the US. Some regions and airlines have been harder hit by the storm than others, with Texas, in particular, facing a significant volume of cancellations in recent days.

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is responsible for a significant proportion of the total flights canceled as a result of the storm. The airport saw in excess of 1,100 flights canceled on Thursday – more than half of its total daily operations – whilst a further 201 flights at Dallas Love Field (DAL) were also canceled. As the storm moved on, Friday proved a better day for the Texas airports – but cancellations across the country didn’t end.

With the storm moving eastwards, several airports across the US east coast were forced to cancel flights as a result. Amongst the airport most significantly affected was Boston Logan International Airport, which saw more than 500 inbound and outbound flights canceled – more than half of the total number of flights expected through the airport. A fifth of the flights that did manage to depart from Boston did so with a delay.

New York and New Jersey have also felt the effects of the storm. Friday’s reports showed that Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey saw 111 flight cancellations – representing 18% of its flights – along with 170 flight delays, whilst LaGuardia faced 106 flight cancellations and 255 delays. American Airlines has been worst hit by the storm, facing a total of 843 flights canceled over Thursday and Friday, with JetBlue, Delta and Republic also seeing significant cancellations.

Storm Uri Causes Mass Disruptions – What Travelers Need To Know

The conditions have been so bad that the New York Thruway Authority asked travelers to avoid travel yesterday. The state has also issued a travel advisory, asking those in New York City to “use mass transit, allow for extra travel time, and exercise caution” due to hazardous driving conditions such as ice, snow, and poor visibility. The storm has already caused fatal accidents across the country.

According to American Airlines, travelers are able to change their flights for free if they have been affected by the storm. However, certain conditions must be met, such as keeping the same origin and destination city and flying within a certain time period. Southwest also has similar policies that allow travelers to rebook affected flights with any extra charge or fees, providing it is in the same class as the original booking.
