Every single year, millions of travelers head south of the border looking for a sun-drenched escape, and almost all of them end up funneled into the exact same high-energy resort strips. They book all-inclusive packages in Cancun or fight the spring break crowds in Cabo, spending their entire vacation trapped inside commercialized tourist bubbles.
On my recent trip to Baja California Sur, I wanted the exact opposite of that.
I wanted a destination with genuine local soul, world-class outdoor adventure, and pristine waters, but without the chaotic nightlife or aggressive timeshare pitches.
So I flew down to the tip of the peninsula and headed straight for La Paz.
I can tell you without a single shred of hesitation that this trip was absolutely AMAZZZZIIIINNNGGGG. La Paz is an absolute anomaly in modern travel: it is intensely safe, deeply authentic, and completely devoid of sprawling mega-resorts.
If you want a coastal town where you can walk the streets at midnight in total peace and eat some of the best food in North America, here is how you do La Paz right.
Unmatched Safety: A 90/100 Traveler Safety Score
Whenever I tell people back home that we’re planning a trip south of the border, the very first question is almost always about safety. It is a completely fair concern—safety is top-of-mind for every traveler today. But La Paz operates on a completely different frequency than the typical tourist hubs.

- A Peaceful Regional Capital: As the quiet capital of Baja California Sur, the city benefits from incredible civic stability, well-maintained infrastructure, and exceptionally low crime rates.
- Total Ease After Dark: I felt completely at ease strolling down the iconic Malecón boardwalk late at night. There are no aggressive timeshare vendors or wild nightclub crowds—just local families enjoying the evening breeze, kids riding bikes, and a deeply comforting, peaceful atmosphere.
The Basecamp: Coastal Disconnect At Hotel Indigo
I’ll admit, the drive from the Cabo airport can feel like a haul, but it is so worth it! And if you are lucky enough to fly out of LAX, you can actually fly direct. But if you have to take a car like me, you can pre-book a nice van with AC and wifi built in and watch a movie or get some work done like I did.
Once I was in La Paz, I checked into the Hotel Indigo La Paz Puerta Cortés, which sits right on the waterfront along the Sea of Cortez.
- The Setting: The property is tucked into an exclusive coastal community just minutes from the famous downtown boardwalk, surrounded by dramatic desert hills and calm harbor waters.
- The Vibe: It offers the perfect balance of modern, understated luxury and immediate access to a gorgeous beach. Instead of feeling like a massive, impersonal hotel block, the property feels seamlessly integrated into the Baja landscape.
Waking up, grabbing breakfast overlooking the marina, and watching the morning light hit the desert mountains set an unbelievably peaceful tone for the entire trip. I met with a group of other travelers that evening and went into town for an amazing first dinner (more on that further down!).
The Island Escape: Off-Grid Glamping On Espíritu Santo
If you visit La Paz, taking a boat out into the Sea of Cortez to explore Isla Espíritu Santo is a non-negotiable. This uninhabited island is a protected UNESCO World Heritage marine reserve, featuring towering volcanic cliffs, hidden coves, and water so clear it looks photoshopped.
Instead of just doing a quick day-trip boat tour, we spent an off-grid night glamping right on the sand at Camp Cecil de la Isla.
- Total Disconnection: With zero cell service and no WiFi, staying in luxury tents directly on the beach forces you to completely unplug.
- Active Exploration: We spent the afternoon snorkeling, swimming in the bay, and hiking around camp.
- The Sunset Hike: Before dinner, a local guide led us on a hike across the island’s desert ridge, offering top-down panoramic views of the coast as the sun dropped below the horizon.
Ending the night with a freshly prepared dinner right on the beach, falling asleep to the sound of gentle waves, and stargazing under a pitch-black desert sky was easily one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had in Mexico.
The Marine Life: Sea Lions, Whale Sharks, And Balandra Beach
The marine ecosystem surrounding La Paz was famously nicknamed the “Aquarium of the World” by Jacques Cousteau, and it more than lives up to the hype.
For years and years, it has been on my bucket list to swim with whale sharks. They are just so freaking cute (even if they are the size of a bus lol) and I just couldn’t wait to finally meet one! IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT!
I didn’t just meet one, I met 5! The experience is a bit more chaotic (in a fun way) than I was expecting, but it is super well regulated and your guide will help tons. You hop in the water with your guide and swim alongside them, keeping proper distance while they feed in the bay.
They are so gentle, and if you make eye contact with them, you can almost see them thinking, “what’s up, bro?”
They look like they are barely moving, but to keep pace with them, you will be kicking quite a bit, so expect to work out a bit! I would suggest a light breakfast, as it isn’t something I would want to do on a full stomach.
After meeting whale sharks and saying goodbyes, we took a boat up to Los Islotes at the northern tip of the island to snorkel alongside a wild colony of sea lions. Swimming in crystal-clear water while curious, playful sea lion pups dart and somersault all around you is a pure, bucket-list travel high.
I had a little baby come right up to me and it was adorable. Its mom barked at it to come back, and it swooped around in a 180 so fast I missed it in a blink. So fun!
A Quick Creator Tip: If you travel with a camera setup like I do, leave your drone in your bag. Local authorities strictly enforce no-drone policies around the whale sharks and protected island zones to protect the delicate marine environment.
We capped off our water day at Balandra Beach, which is universally regarded as Mexico’s best beach.
Because Balandra sits inside a protected wildlife area, the water is shallow, calm, and crystal-clear for hundreds of yards. You can literally wade through knee-deep turquoise water out to see El Hongo (the Mushroom), the famous rock formation carved by centuries of wind and tide.
The Mountain Audible: Artisanal Wine And Cheese At Rancho Cacachilas
One of the best decisions we made on this trip was completely changing up our inland itinerary. The original schedule had us doing a structured tour down to the old silver mining town of El Triunfo for mule rides and museum visits.
We decided to audible and spend a full, immersive day at Rancho Cacachilas up in the Sierra Cacachilas mountains instead.
- Sustainable Ranching: Rancho Cacachilas is an incredible working ranch dedicated to regenerative agriculture, permaculture farming, and land stewardship.
- The Experience: We toured the beautiful, solar-powered grounds and learned how they are actively restoring the surrounding desert watershed.
- The Tasting:The highlight of the day was sitting down for an incredible artisanal wine and cheese tasting on the ranch grounds. They craft their own cheeses right on property, and pairing them with local wines while looking out over the mountain wilderness was a wildly relaxing, top-tier experience.
The Culinary Scene: Downtown Eats At Biznaga And Nemi
On our first and last night of the trip, we decided to explore the downtown culinary landscape.
The downtown core of La Paz is vibrant, incredibly walkable, and remarkably safe. Strolling down the iconic Malecón boardwalk at dusk while watching the sky turn electric shades of purple and pink is ritual here.
When it comes to dining, you have to hit these two specific spots:
- Biznaga: We grabbed dinner here instead of our planned walking tour, and it was outstanding. Located right in town, this laid-back Baja bistro serves insanely flavorful, unpretentious dishes. I loved their fresh, vibrant approach to local Baja ingredients. It is casual, super tasty, and a total must-visit.
- Nemi: If you want a high-end, memorable dining experience, you have to book a table at Nemi. Situated in the historic center, this spot offers an elevated, contemporary tasting menu that showcases the region’s agricultural and seafood bounty. The culinary creativity, presentation, and service here easily rival Michelin-caliber establishments in major world capitals.
La Paz completely shatters the myth that a luxury Mexican getaway requires booking a massive, crowded all-inclusive resort. If you want pristine beaches, incredible wildlife encounters, world-class food, and a laid-back vibe that lets you truly decompress, La Paz is operating in a league of its own.
