With typically mild winters, Texas can be a great place to visit during the colder months. If you’re looking to plan a trip to this southern state, here are 7 cities that will make a perfect destination.
1. Galveston Island
This fun island getaway is located in the Gulf of Mexico just off the coast of Texas. It’s known for several memorable attractions, meaning you’ll have no shortage of options to choose from. Consider checking out Moody Gardens, a hotel that features a collection of glass pyramids that are home to various live animal exhibits such as an aquarium with sharks. You also won’t want to miss the Historic Pleasure Pier, which features amusement rides, restaurants, and carnival games.
2. South Padre Island
Here’s another beautiful island off the coast of Texas! South Padre Island is particularly well known for its high-quality resorts, as well as being home to a number of beaches. For lodging, consider checking out Pearl South Padre Beachfront Resort or Peninsula Island Resort and Spa. Some memorable activities on the island include beachfront horseback rides and wildlife watching. Texas is also one of the few places in the U.S. where driving on the beach is legal, which can make for a great experience or way of viewing the sunrise or sunset.
3. Fredericksburg
If you’re looking for an out-of-the-box option, you’ll want to check out Fredericksburg! This unique town features a German-inspired theme. You can learn more about the town’s German heritage at the Pioneer Museum. You’ll also want to check out the area’s wineries. Finally, a visit to see Vereins Kirche, a replica of a 19th-century German church, is a great way to top off an aesthetic and historical trip here.
4. Big Bend National Park
Nature lovers won’t want to miss this option. Big Bend National Park is a gorgeous location that offers plenty of year-round recreation options. Visiting in the cooler months is an excellent way to beat the heat. January through April is one of the most popular months to visit, actually, though November and December can make for a great trip as well. The park has four developed campgrounds, as well as some primitive backcountry sites. The area is also home to a ton of gorgeous hiking trails, as well as wildlife viewing opportunities.
5. El Paso
El Paso offers some unique charm – and great cuisine – that is hard to rival! This far south city in Texas is an excellent spot to enjoy Tex-Mex cuisine. L & J Cafe, as well as El Taquito, are two restaurants offering such fare that you won’t go wrong with! For some things to do in the city, consider checking out the Scenic Drive, visiting Franklin Mountains State Park, or catching a show at the Plaza Theatre.
6. Austin
The capital of Texas, this city offers a little something for everyone. If you’re an avid lover of the outdoors, you’ll be right at home while visiting the various parks and nature trails interspersed throughout the city. River Place Nature Trail, along with Turkey Creek Trail, are two such spots that offer some gorgeous scenery with a far more remote feel than their location would suggest. The city is also home to a vibrant live music scene – considering checking out some bars that feature local artists such as Carousel Lounge or the Saxon Pub to get a feel for an authentic side of the city.
7. Marfa
If you’re a fan of small-town charm mixed with a quirky, artsy vibe, this is the option for you! The town is home to vibrant arts and music scene, and this is reflected in its overall ambiance. One of the more notable attractions the town features include Prada Marfa – a Prada storefront almost literally in the middle of nowhere. You can also look forward to checking out several art installations and galleries as well as enjoying some great local food. For lodging, consider staying at Hotel Paisano, a gorgeous and well-loved boutique hotel.
