The United States is home to some truly gorgeous places that make for an amazing getaway. If you’re looking to enjoy sparkling snow, calm winter nights, and snuggling up by a warm fire, here are 7 great places that won’t disappoint!
1. Leavenworth, Washington
Leavenworth is the perfect place for a winter trip! This Bavarian-themed town nestled in the Pacific Northwest is exactly as quirky and gorgeous as it sounds. Snow covers the misty mountain tops surrounding this small town, framing the cheerful lights that adorn the unique storefronts. There’s a number of interesting shops here too – check out Kris Kringl for a taste of Christmas all year long. Or head over to the Nutcracker Shop and Museum to see a huge collection of nutcrackers from around the world.
2. Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Jackson Hole is a winter getaway that has multiple draws! It’s well-loved for its skiing and is home to some popular ski resorts such as The Snow King. It also sits just outside of Grand Teton National Park, and is a few hours from Yellowstone, making it a great home base or overnight stay for those planning a trip to either of those areas. Finally, it’s nearby several great snowmobiling areas, including the previously mentioned Yellowstone as well as Togwotee Pass.
3. Breckenridge, Colorado
Breckenridge, Colorado is the perfect spot to visit if you love winter activities such as downhill skiing and snowboarding. It's home to a widely loved ski resort, the aptly named Breckenridge Ski Resort, and has plenty to do around town after a long day of hitting the slopes as well. Enjoy a delicious, high-quality sit-down meal at Ember, or grab a quick bite at Northside Pizza and Wings. Before or after dinner, you'll also want to check out some of the town's boutique shops such as Joy of Sox.
4. Aspen, Colorado
If you’re looking for a place to visit that’s both luxurious and perfect for winter recreation, Aspen is the choice for you! This charming town is home to some world-class ski resorts such as Aspen Snowmass and The Little Nell. It also has no shortage of high-end restaurants and shops that you’ll want to check out after hitting the slopes. Consider enjoying some sushi at Matsuhisa or grabbing a drink and playing a game of pool at Eric’s Bar.
5. Fairbanks, Alaska
Fairbanks is a small city that’s the perfect home base for exploring more of Alaska. Its status as a starting point for several tours, as well as its easily accessible location – at least relatively for Alaska – earns it its spot on this list and makes it a great option for tourists. For a couple of specific tours you may want to check out, Alaska Wildlife Guide offers a day tour of Chena Hot Springs and the Northern Lights. Alaska Journey Tours, meanwhile, allows you to experience dog-sledding firsthand with one of their tours.
6. Lake Placid
Here’s a great option for those on the East Coast looking to enjoy a winter wonderland. Lake Placid is widely loved for being an excellent spot for winter activities – so well-loved in fact that the winter Olympics have been held twice there. You can look forward to enjoying ice-skating, skiing, and of course, warming up afterward at one of the town's excellent and cozy restaurants or bars such as Lake Placid Pub And Brewery. Finally, while it might be best known for outdoor recreation, Lake Placid also has some fun local shops worth checking out, such as The Adirondack Popcorn Co.
7. Yellowstone National Park
This is arguably the best option for those looking for some breathtaking winter scenery who maybe aren’t as into cold-weather recreation. A winter visit to Yellowstone not only offers some truly unique experiences such as viewing vibrant, steaming hot springs bordered by glistening snow, but also offers a variety of ways you can enjoy the park. If you’re an avid outdoorsman, or up for some adventure, consider booking a snowmobile tour of part of the park. If cold weather isn’t your thing, but you’d still like to enjoy some iconic attractions such as Old Faithful, a snow coach tour is the option for you! Finally, if you’d like to drive your own vehicle, Mammoth Hot Springs is a section of the park that stays open year-round (weather permitting) and features some one-of-a-kind thermal features as well as dining and lodging options.
