The US Department of State has issued an updated range of travel advisories for several countries around the world, some of which are European destinations. With Europe expected to be a popular destination for American travelers in light of the recent easing of restrictions by the US, the update could force many travelers to reconsider their plans and head to alternate locations on the continent.
Along with a handful of popular European destinations, there were several other countries that were implicated in the most recent round of travel advisories, which ranged from the least severe Level 1 and Level 2 warnings to the strictest possible Level 4 warnings. Here’s a look at what the most recent updates were, plus a look at which other European destinations have been handed the most severe warning levels by the US State Department in recent weeks.
US Issues New Travel Advisories – What Travelers Should Know
The US State Department has seemingly been working overtime of late, issuing updates on several occasions throughout the month of November in an attempt to keep American travelers safer abroad as they begin to travel in greater numbers once more. Yesterday’s travel advisory update included 13 countries, which brought about one Level 1 update, four updates at Level 2, four Level 3 updates and four Level 4 updates – the most severe warning level afforded to travelers.
Three European countries were handed Level 4 travel advisory updates – Iceland, Hungary and Czech Republic. Each of their warning pages warn travelers not to visit due to their high levels of Covid-19, with no other threats to travelers highlighted. Along with these three countries, Papua New Guinea was also handed a Level 4 travel advisory warning, with its page claiming that it is “due to Covid-19, crime, civil unrest, health concerns, natural disasters, and kidnapping.”
Whilst the warnings don’t legally prevent travelers from heading to a country, the update is bound to make some travelers think twice about heading to these locations. Iceland is a popular travel destination at this time of year due to the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, whilst fairytale-esque cities in the Czech Republic and Hungary – such as the likes of Prague and Budapest – are also popular with travelers at Christmas time.
Iceland, Hungary and the Czech Republic aren't the only European destinations to receive travel advisory warning updates recently. The Netherlands was also labeled a Level 4 country in an update last week due to the high level of Covid-19 in the country. Since then, the Netherlands has been placed under a partial lockdown – the first European country to enter lockdown since the summer – in a bid to halt the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
Receiving Level 3 travel advisory warnings in yesterday's update were The Bahamas, Pakistan, Japan and Bolivia, again with Covid-19 the predominant cause for their strict warning levels. There were also Level 2 updates for Mozambique, Morocco, Liberia and India, whilst The Gambia was designated worthy of a Level 1 warning – the least severe warning possible.
The renewed travel advisory warnings serve as a reminder that whilst the Covid-19 situation in a traveler's home country may be improving, that isn't necessarily the case around the world. Travelers should read the travel advisory notices for any country they are visiting in order to know what to expect, and they should also ensure they take out a good travel insurance policy to keep them covered when abroad.

Omg they expect us to believe Czech Republic is more dangerous than Liberia or Pakistan ? LOL. I went there last year when they were under a strict lockdown curfew with a lot of alleged covid cases. Didn’t even catch the flu and was perfectly fine
