The US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention updated its travel guidance for Mexico on Monday, and the popular vacation destination is now at a Level 3 travel health warning. The new Level 3 (high risk) warning puts Mexico up from its previous ranking at Level 2 (moderate risk) just last week.

As health guidance for all US citizens, the CDC recommends avoiding travel to Mexico at this time if you're not fully vaccinated against Covid, and there is still a risk to contract and spread the virus while traveling.

The latest CDC advisory states that, “If you are not up to date with your Covid-19 vaccines, avoid travel to Mexico. Even if you are up to date with your Covid-19 vaccines, you may still be at risk for getting and spreading Covid-19.”

The CDC also issued new travel warnings for six other countries, including:

  • New Caledonia
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Guyana
  • Mongolia
  • Namibia
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis

At this time, a total of 113 nations are listed on the CDC's Level 3 health advisory for Covid.

Mexico Among Countries In Latest Travel Advisory By The State Department

Monday's update from the CDC comes with the State Department's most recent update on travel advisories for US citizens and residents. The latest advisory list was updated to feature 10 countries, including Mexico. The Department has released seven rounds of travel advisories over the past month, which is higher than usual.

The State Department has uniquely ranked Mexico by region, and travelers have been issued different advisories according to Mexican state.

For your information, the popular state of Yucatan is currently at a Level 1 (Exercise normal precautions). Quintana Roo (home to Cancun and Playa del Carmen) , Baja California Sur, Oaxaca, and Mexico City are currently at a Level 2 (exercise increased caution when traveling). How Does The CDC Typically Rank Mexico In 2022?

At the beginning of May of this year, the US CDC moved Mexico down to a Level 2 moderate health risk ranking and it's been at that level until the update that was announced this week.

Mexico was at a Level 3 for much of early 2022, and Travel Off Path even reported that Covid cases in Mexico peaked in January of this year when the highest daily case count on record was 35,201.

How Is The Covid Situation In Mexico? Information For Travelers

While the numbers aren't near the peak that was seen back in January, Covid cases have gradually been on the rise in Mexico over the past few weeks. At a 7-day average this week according to Our World in Data, the country has reported over 3,500 cases with nearly 10,000 tests administered, which is a 36.9% positivity rate.

Mexico officially shifted the Covid situation into an endemic phase in late April. The traffic light system that was in place throughout the country for over a year was also abolished at the same time, which was the system that ranked each region by a color scheme (green, yellow, orange, red) based on Covid cases.

When it came to the travelers experience, some curfews were put in place, masks were required in certain spaces, and bars and restaurants had to abide by a new closing time when a region went into orange or red. This guidance has not been in place since the end of April.

Traveling To Mexico In 2022

In 2022, Mexico is still one of the top destinations for US Americans to visit, and that includes the latest travel destinations without any restrictions such as testing.

And with the US government recently dropping the negative Covid test requirement for all international air travelers last week, demand for travel continues to be on the rise.

How can anyone still trust the CDC?

US Government doesn't want you to experience how free, great, and cheap Mexico is!

And just use common sense when it comes to crime and safety.

Violent rime is escalating in "progressive/leftist" major US cities

For example, in California, you won't be arrested for stealing under $950. Finally SF's progressive gentle-on-criminals DA has been recalled.

@R, most likely your friends got Covid not because of the location, but because they got vaxxed. According to statistics from the CDC, vaccination may reduce the symptoms when caught with the virus within the 5 months period of getting the shot, but also does increase the likelihood of catching the virus. However, after the 5 months of getting the shot, not only does it NOT reduce the symptoms anymore, but you will be left with a lower natural immune system, resulting in a worse overall situation.

@Health Freedom, fully agree. I just went to Mexico unvaxxed and was 100% safe, healthy and covid free. Meanwhile my triple vaxxed family and friends who were in North America caught covid over and over
