France Reopening June 9th For Vaccinated Travelers

Earlier this spring the prime minister of France, Emmanuel Macron, revealed his plans to allow Americans to visit, adding they were “working hard to propose a very concrete solution, especially for U.S. citizens who are vaccinated.”

On Friday, that solution became officially available as the government announced that it is removing the need for coronavirus tests for vaccinated Europeans, as well as vaccinated tourists from most of the rest of the world, including the United States and Canada provided they have a negative test.

The new rules will kick in Wednesday, June 9th.

Green Countries

Visits from the EU and those countries classed as “green” will become extremely easy. As long as passengers are fully vaccinated, they can enter with no tests, quarantines, or restrictions.

Green countries include EU nations, plus Australia, South Korea, Israel, Japan, Lebanon, New Zealand, and Singapore.

Orange Countries

Outside of Europe, most countries worldwide are currently classified as “orange.”

Vaccinated visitors from these countries, including the United States, Canada, and Britain, will no longer need to quarantine on arrival or justify the reasons for their trip to France. However, they will have to provide a negative PCR test no older than 72 hours or a negative antigenic test taken no more than 48 hours before.

Un-vaccinated visitors from Orange countries will face a few additional restrictions. In addition to the 72-hour PCR test, they will also require an essential reason for entering (tourism not being a valid reason) and isolate for 7-days upon arrival.

Red Countries

Tourists from “red” countries with virus surges and worrisome variants will not be allowed in France for tourism. This list currently has 16 countries, including India, South Africa, and Brazil.

What’s Open In France?

Earlier this spring, Macron revealed a four-stage plan for reopening prior to the arrival of any foreign tourists.

June 9th marks the third phase of the reopening plan. Bars, cafés, and restaurants previously reopened for limited outdoor dining but can now reopen indoor spaces at 50% capacity and outdoor spaces at 100% capacity. Nightclubs remain closed.

Shops, museums, cinemas, and tourist sites previously reopened on May 19th but had to allow 8 square meters for each person. That limit drops down to 4m sq per person on June 9th, so entry numbers can increase.

Large events such as concerts and sports matches of up to 5,000 people are allowed again. Entry will be via the health passport with proof of either being fully vaccinated or a recent covid-19 test.

Masks are still compulsory in all indoor public spaces, at a €135 fine.

The curfew is expected to end on June 30th, with the possibility of events of more than 1,000 people, indoors or outdoors permitted.

France Will Be Using Its Own Health Passport

Fed up of waiting for the EU’s digital green certificate to become a reality, France took matters into their own hands and made an app of their own.

The French health passport is already up and running on the TousAntiCovid app, which now has a ‘my wallet’ section where you can scan in vaccination certificates or a recent negative Covid test.

Officials can then check the validity of the scans through their own app, making it a speedy, secure solution to safe travel. From June 9th, the health passport will be required to enter certain large events in France including concerts and sports matches.

Flights Set To Increase

Now the news is official, airlines (especially those in the States) will be adding dozens of France routes for summer tourists. Delta has already announced they intend to offer 9x's the amount of direct flights to different destinations in France than any other American carrier. Delta is expanding Paris flights from Minneapolis/St. Paul and Boston, and adding Nice from New York-JFK.

This is incorrect info about France considering all of the EU to be on the “green” list. I live in Sweden, and am fully vaccinated, and unfortunately I can not visit France since they consider my country to be unsafe. So even vaccinated Swedes still have to quarantine upon arrival in France. I have no doubt that there are many other EU countries that France is discriminating against.

@Kashlee Kucheran,

The two EU countries I want to go to (France and Netherlands) still have not removed Sweden from their banned countries list though. I wish you could set them straight for us! :)

This is great news but I am bit lost of one aspect of this. I understand that those fully vaccinated arriving from green countries are exempt from testing and quarantine requirements.

As a fully vaccinated Canadian, does this mean that I can travel to France (with a negative test), stay there for a week, go to a green (EU) country, and then return to France without having to provide a negative test?

Essentially, I am asking if my vaccination record (from an orange country) will exempt me from testing and quarantine if arriving from a green country.

We believe you will have to be in a green country for a minimum of 14 days in order to be treated under 'green' rules.

The new entry requirements won’t help France’s tourism industry to recover. And add to this the constant summer strikes that tourists have to endure.

I believe transits through France are fine, if you are ticketed on the same airline and you do not need to leave the boarding area or go through customs
