These 6 Mexico Destinations Received 22 Million Tourists in 2020

While most countries have enacted strict border closures and restrictions during the pandemic, Mexico has kept its doors wide open for tourism. Being one of the only destinations with relaxed entry requirements for Americans, Mexico became the third most visited country in the world for 2020. 

Over 22 million international tourists visited the top six destinations in Mexico during the pandemic. The cities are well known for being tourism hotspots for visitors from the United States

Puerto Vallarta

1.6 Million International Arrivals in 2020

Puerto Vallarta recorded 2.5 million total passengers through its gates in 2020 with 1.6 million of them being international visitors. The resort city has been a popular destination for Americans and Canadian tourists for decades. 

International arrivals to Puerto Vallarta were down 50.7% from 2019. 

Tijuana

1.7 Million International Arrivals In 2020

Tijuana recorded a total of 6.3 million passengers in 2020 with 1.7 million being international visitors. 

Passengers who use the CBX to arrive in Tijuana are classified as international visitors. The CBX (Cross Border Express) is a pedestrian bridge linking San Diego and Tijuana.

Overall international visitors were down 41.6% from 2019.

1.8 Million International Arrivals In 2020

Los Cabos recorded a total of 3 million passengers in 2020 with 1.8 million being international visitors. The majority of international visitors who visit the resort city are from the United States. 

Overall international visitors were down 49.9% from 2019.

Guadalajara

2.4 Million International Arrivals In 2020

Guadalajara recorded a total of 8.1 million passengers in 2020 with 2.4 million being international visitors. The city receives both a high amount of tourists and business travelers.

Overall international visitors were down 45.8% from 2019.

6.8 Million International Arrivals In 2020

Cancun received a total of 12.3 million passengers in 2020 with 6.8 being international visitors. Cancun is well known for being one of the top tourist destinations for Americans and the gateway to the entire Mexican Caribbean. Travelers arriving in Cancun are either staying in the city to enjoy luxury all inclusive resorts or headed to the nearby tourist hotspots of Playa Del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel. 

Overall international visitors were down 58.8% from 2019.

Mexico City

7.8 Million International Arrivals In 2020

Mexico City received a total of 16.4 million passengers in 2020 with 7.8 million being international visitors. Mexico City has long been a popular city for international tourists. However in 2020, reduced connectivity forced many travelers to arrive in Mexico City first before flying to their final destination within the country. 

Overall international visitors were down 58.4% from 2019.

Although international arrivals to popular destinations in Mexico were down between 40%-60% in 2020, the country has recovered more of its passenger traffic than most countries around the world. 

To date, Mexico has confirmed 1.63 million cases of Covid-19 and 140 thousand deaths.
