These are the top 10 tropical destinations open to tourists in 2022! As the new year draws closer, we come upon our second year dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on travel. You may be wondering what’s currently open to U.S. tourists. Here are 10 dreamy tropical getaways that have opened their borders to travelers from the U.S. for your upcoming vacation.
1. Grand Bahama
The Bahamas are pretty much synonymous with relaxation and gorgeous, and for good reason. Grand Bahama is no exception to this. Some popular activities include snorkeling, boating, and, of course, enjoying the stunning beaches. Travelers will be required to acquire a Travel Health Visa and provide a negative COVID-19 test. Quarantines are not currently in place for travelers who meet both of those requirements regardless of vaccination status.
Barbados is a beautiful island home to rich and vibrant culture, amazing beaches, and no shortage of fun activities. Consider seeing sea life up close and personal by embarking on a submarine tour. Or get out of your comfort zone by to Harrison’s Cave which will give you the opportunity to traverse a stunning limestone cavern.
Travelers must have a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours regardless of vaccination status. Additionally, unvaccinated travelers will be required to quarantine at an approved accommodation and take a test on the 5th day. Following a negative result, they will not have to quarantine.
Antigua makes up half of the Caribbean country of Antigua and Barbuda and is the perfect destination for a tropical vacation. In addition to typical vacation activities such as snorkeling or enjoying the sun on one of the island’s gorgeous beaches, you may also want to consider checking out a local market – these are a great place to find unique gifts, fresh fruit, and enjoy the local cuisine.
Travelers may be required to take a COVID-19 test on arrival, and entry for unvaccinated travelers is currently restricted.
4. Key West
This is a great option for those traveling from North America – thanks to the overseas highway, this island is accessible via car. Key West is one of the most well-known islands in the Florida keys. Some examples of activities you can look forward to include scuba diving, watching some gorgeous sunrises, or going shopping at the iconic Mallory Square.
If you are already in the U.S., travel to the Florida Keys is unrestricted. Out of country travelers must provide a negative COVID-19 test to enter the U.S. regardless of vaccination status. Additionally, the U.S. is currently restricting the entry of many unvaccinated travelers unless they fall under an exemption.
Jamaica is another Caribbean island that is home to both gorgeous beaches as well as lush rainforests. Winter and spring are often considered the best times to visit the island. Weather is typically milder and hurricane season (during the summer months) has not yet come. This makes this a great option for an early 2022 vacation or a holiday trip.
Jamaica has created “resilient corridors”. These are areas of the city where they are allowing tourists without quarantine or negative COVID-19 test. Vaccinated travelers can stay outside of these corridors if they provide a negative test. Jamaica is requiring that unvaccinated travelers stay at a hotel or resort within one of these areas or quarantine at home for 14 days.
6. Bora Bora
If you love scuba diving (or snorkeling) this is the option for you! Located near Tahiti, Bora Bora is a small island surrounded by gorgeous coral reefs. The island is also home to some amazing pink sands beaches.
A COVID-19 test taken at the airport upon arrival is required for entry, and there is a quarantine period in place for unvaccinated travelers.
7. Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is the perfect spot for a relaxing vacation! The country is home to beaches, waterfalls, and a rainforest. This means you’ll have no shortage of things to do and see on this island. Additionally, as it is a U.S. territory, U.S. citizens don’t need a passport to visit.
Vaccinated visitors will have to show proof of their passport, but not quarantine or provide a negative test. Puerto Rico is currently requiring proof of a negative COVID-19 test for unvaccinated travelers.
8. St. Barts
If you’re looking for a truly luxurious vacation, consider a trip to St. Barts. You can look forward to enjoying some gorgeous white sand beaches. The surrounding waters are also perfect for a variety of water activities including kayaking and windsurfing, and snorkeling.
While vaccinated travelers do not have to quarantine currently, St. Barts is currently requiring quarantine for unvaccinated travelers.
Cuba is currently open to international tourism and is a great spot for your upcoming vacation. You can look forward to checking out some hidden swimming holes in Topes de Collantes National Park. Or, experience a remote and peaceful beach at Playas Las Tumbas.
The country is not currently requiring a quarantine period. However, a COVID-19 test may be required.
Aruba is the perfect destination for all sorts of visitors! The country is one of the safest destinations in the Caribbean. This makes it a great option for families with children or solo travelers. Additionally, the variety of activities makes it an even better choice – kids will enjoy a submarine tour. Meanwhile adults will love relaxing on one of the island’s gorgeous white sand beaches for an afternoon.
Aruba is currently requiring travelers to present a negative COVID-19 test. Travelers arriving without one will be required to take one upon entry and may have to quarantine for up to 24 hours or until results are in.
