The Museum District is located just south of downtown Houston is the cultural hub of the city. Admission to 11 of the 19 museums located in the Museum District are free of charge, year round.

Walk the Trails at Hermann Park

Hermann Park is where the tourists go to feel like a local. There are many ways to spend a glorious day in this park. You can spend some time in the tranquility of the Japanese Garden. Then soak in the beauty of McGovern Centennial Garden. See some exotic animals at the Houston Zoo, or walk along the park’s many trails. A visit to Houston would not be complete without a visit to the Johnson Space Center. Come and take a tour of the birthplace of NASA and the American Space Program. This hip area of town has many quirky little shops that sell unique items. On 19^th Street there are a great many retail options including antique shops, thrift stores and cafes. Stop into Boomtown Coffee for a coffee or snack while you break from shopping. For a gift for someone special, Jubilee is the place to find that treasure. You can purchase food and goods from local vendors at The Local Love Market. The market happens on the first Saturday of every month from 11 AM to 6 PM.

Reconnect with Wildlife at Armand Bayou Nature Center

About 26 miles outside of the Houston metro area lies the largest urban wilderness preserve in the United States. While walking The Discovery Loop Trail, you will make your way to all the main attractions of the preserve including the Interpretive Building, a bison viewing area, and Martyn Farm Site. At the center you can view over 370 species of animals including alligators, armadillos, deer, turtles and even the mighty eagle. If you are interested in a guided tour of the center, the weekends are your best bet for scheduling these tours. Due to new safety regulations, the center strongly recommends guests to purchase their admission tickets online prior to visiting the preserve.

See Moving Art at the Art Car Museum

The Art Car Museum is not your typical modern art museum. At the museum you will see everything in vehicles ranging from hippie vans to police cars and much more. All automobiles are decorated in various ways including brightly painted and bejeweled cars and even some fitted with intricate art installations. Every April, the museum holds an Art Car Parade, where spectators can see a wide variety of the colorful cars cruising the street. Visits to the Art car Museum are by appointment only from Wednesday to Sunday.
