Cancun and San Jose del Cabo lead a top 10 list of international destinations for American travelers this spring according to a survey by Allianz Partners. It comes as no surprise the the resort city of Cancun once again tops the list of favorite destinations for U.S. travelers.
Allianz analyzed more than 1.8 million flight itineraries for trips five to eight days in length for the spring break season, defined as Feb. 19 to April 18 and compiled both the top 10 domestic and international destinations that had been booked by U.S. travelers.
Top 10 International Destinations
Americans have booked the most trips this spring break to Cancun, San Jose del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta. While the top two positions remained unchanged from last year, Puerto Vallarta moved up one spot to break into the top 3.
77% of American travelers will stay within the U.S. for trips this spring while those traveling abroad will be looking mostly to the Caribbean for warm weather. Other countries in the top 10 included the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos, Aruba, Costa Rica and the Bahamas.
Two noticeable destinations which dropped off the list from 2020 were Grand Cayman and London. Due to very tight travel restrictions currently in place, traveling to these countries for a vacation at this time was off the table. The international top 10 list was heavily dominated by warm locations that had no quarantine restrictions.
Top 10 Destinations in the United States
Once again, warm weather destinations topped the list for Americans that chose to stay closer to home. The top 3 destinations in the U.S. for spring break according to Allianz were Orlando, Phoenix and Miami. Florida remained the top state again this year with 4 destinations making the top 10 list.
Other cities rounding out the top 10 included Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Fort Myers, Tampa, Salt Lake City, Denver and Honolulu. Noticeable absent from this years list were major cities such as Los Angeles and New York. Both cities have had strict travel restrictions in places along with high case numbers. Travelers have been opting for smaller cities on the list including Denver and Honolulu.
Allianz also noted that road trips have surged in popularity this year with many travelers opting for a more controlled vacation that will allow for great social distancing. Americans are still not totally ready to travel as the survey also revealed that only 43% of yearly spring break travelers were planning a trip for 2021.
