Important Update: Cancun hotels and restaurants will not require proof of vaccination from tourists, the Quintana Roo tourism board has confirmed. Hotels and restaurants will be required to vaccinate and test their own staff only.

Cancun Beaches remain open for tourists

The move comes after unprecedented levels of Covid-19 cases in Quintana Roo which is home to the popular tourism hotspots of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. The new measure will apply to the entire state. The situation has gotten so bad that the Cancun Hard Rock Hotel has committed the entire top 2 floors for patients who have tested positive for Covid-19.

All employees working in the tourism sector must now provide proof of vaccination to their employers or produce a negative PCR or antigen test result every 3 days.

Despite the worries that an increased COVID infection rate in Cancun may bring, Roberto Cintrón, President of the Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, wants to remind tourists:  “It is important to highlight that infections are occurring among local youth,” he said. “We have enough hospital beds for them, if necessary. But it is not happening among tourists.”

Additional Prevention Measures

The state of Quintana Roo has already introduced measures to help stop the spread of the new Delta Variant. Cancun closed busy roads where crowds tend to congregate in the evening hours and erected sanitation filters which check the temperatures of locals and tourists entering crowded tourist hotspots.

Additionally, hotels and restaurants are operating under strict capacity guidelines to allow for social distancing. Masks are required indoors and outdoors with the exception of beach areas.

Relaxed Entry Requirements

Mexico has been the king of tourism throughout the pandemic with some of the easiest entry requirements in the world. Travelers are only required to fill out a health declaration form before arrival. Covid-19 testing, vaccinations and quarantines are not required for any visitors entering Mexico.

The relaxed entry requirements have lead to a large surge in tourism from Americans reaching over 2 million tourists arriving at the Cancun International Airport in June.

Despite rising cases the Secretary of Health for Quintana Roo, Alejandra Aguirre Crespo said the tourism hotspots of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum will not close.

“Quintana Roo is not going to close. What Quintana Roo is doing is strengthening health and safety protocols so that both national and international visitors can continue their vacations, and their stay in the state in a safe way,” she said.

Free Testing and Quarantines At Cancun Resorts For Tourists

In January, 2021, many Cancun resorts began offering free Covid-19 testing for American tourists returning home after the United States announced that all travelers must present a negative Covid-19 antigen test no older than 72 hours to board their flights.

Some resorts have even gone as far as offering free hotel nights for any tourist that tests positive and is unable to fly home until a negative result can be produced. This has lead to a strong tourism recovery in Cancun and millions of Americans flocking to the sunny destination.

Understanding the importance of keeping tourism in Cancun open and generating income, the federal government of Mexico has promised an increased supply of vaccines for residents of Quintana Roo. 65% of adults in Quintana Roo – and 50% in Cancun – have had at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Has anyone traveled to Cancun recently? In the past 2 weeks? What precautions, if any, are the hotels taking to protect the guests from each other?

You got to be kidding me. I just booked a trip there with my wife. Cancelling now.

@Andreas Jonsson,

For clarification, the resorts are not requiring guests to show proof of vaccination? Can you share where you stayed?

Thanks in advance.

@Megan Biyac, No vaccine pass what so ever here in Cancun. Still business as usual.

On the other hand there is million of take away food if this going to happens. Which I doubt. As of today, nothing new restrictions here.

@Megan Biyac, I booked a trip too in september. Just choose an airbnb instead of resorts. no small businesses (bars, restaurants etc) can accept this without going under. relax

This is terrible and so disappointing. Do you know yet if other Mexican cities will follow suit?
