Cancun is the top international destination for Americans to travel this spring, with more than 600,000 visitors expected over the next two weeks.
The popular spring break destination has seen a steady flow of tourists during the last year and continues to grow in popularity as it quickly adapts to changing travel requirements for Americans.
Cancun Has Been a Popular Destination Throughout The Pandemic
Cancun has recorded 10 million visitors in the past year, leading the global tourism recovery and top 10 destinations for Americans.
It was one of the world’s first destinations to begin actively promoting tourism in May 2020 before officially reopening for tourism on June 8th.
Cancun’s popularity can be partly attributed to the fact that there is no testing or quarantines required for travelers arriving in Mexico. They are only required to fill out an online health declaration and present the QR code to airport officials.
Additionally, Cancun has been quick to adapt to changing travel restrictions for Americans. They quickly implemented certified labs across the city and at the airport when the United States announced that proof of a negative Covid-19 test would be required for returning home. Some resorts in Cancun even offered free 14 days stays to guests who tested positive for the virus.
More Than 600,000 Visitors Expected This Spring
Quintana Roo governor, Carlos Joaquin, has said more than 600,000 visitors are expected to visit Cancun and Riviera Maya over the next two weeks with the arrival of the Easter holiday season.
Hotel Sector Reports Occupation Rates of 60%
The hotel sector is reporting its best occupancy rates of all of 2021.
Lizzie Cole, executive director of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo, said that hotel occupation rates have been more than 45% in Cancun during the last 14 days. This past weekend, there was an increase of 15% to 60% from Friday to Sunday.
Hotels across the Riviera Maya are showing an increase in hotel reservations. The State Secretariat of Tourism said that hotel occupancy in the Riviera Maya is 32.1%, Cozumel at 51%, and Grand Costa Maya is 29.8%.
Hotel occupation rates are expected to continue to rise, reaching the peak of the season next weekend.
President of the Association of Vacation and Tourist Complexes of Quintana Roo (Acotur), Alberto Solis Martinez, said in a statement:
“Fortunately, the figures for Easter are going up, which is very good news. Another very important point that we see is related to vaccinations in the United States, which is progressing very well, as in Mexico. That encourages people to want to go out again and obviously, it is very beneficial for the different destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.”
Cancun International Airport Continues To Be Busy
The Cancun International Airport has been busy with 1,260 air operations over the past weekend.
The Cancun Airport has had to add more immigration officers to keep up with demand and reduce long wait times. Now, international travelers arriving in the resort city will clear immigration in 2 minutes or less.
Airport managing company ASUR says that the flights are from various destinations in the United States and Mexico, as well as major international hubs including Frankfurt, Bogotá, Madrid, Lisbon, Paris, Buenos Aires, and Panama.
Health and Safety Measures in Place
Cancun was the first destination in the world to receive the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) ‘Safe Travel Stamp‘.
The Acotur president has stressed that during Easter health protocols will be reinforced in Acotur’s accommodation centers to guarantee the safety of national and international visitors, as well as staff.
The government of Quintana Roo has announced three additional sanitary stations will be installed in the Hotel Zone, as well as temporarily increasing the number of reviews to ensure service providers are complying with health guidelines during the busy Easter period.
