Share The Article

International travelers to Guatemala will soon have to show proof of vaccination to enter the country. This new travel requirement, scheduled to take effect on Monday January 10, 2022, is on top of the testing requirements for entry.

From Monday, here are the travel entry requirements for all international arrivals to Guatemala:

  • All travelers aged 12 and over must show proof of fully vaccination for entry. This means two doses of a two-dose required vaccine (Moderna, Pfizer, etc) or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The last required dose must have been administered at least two weeks prior to travel to Guatemala.
  • All travelers aged 10 and over must provide proof of a negative Covid test result (PCR and antigen are currently accepted) from a certified lab taken no later than 3 days prior to check in at the airport or upon arrival at the land border to cross over to Guatemala.

Exceptions Apply For Proof Of Vaccination – Information For Travelers

These new entry requirements don't apply to Guatemalan residents or citizens.

The entry guidance states that if you have a medical contraindication which restricts you from being administered the Covid-19 vaccine, then travelers should bring the official medical certificate proving that condition to show at the border.

What If I'm Traveling Overland From Mexico?

The northern border is a popular passage for those coming to/from Chiapas state in southern Mexico, which is still currently one of the only countries left without any travel entry requirements such as testing or proof of vaccination.

According to the updated guidance on the U.S. Embassy page, all international arrivals will have to show proof of vaccination and a negative test at the airport and the land border crossing.

Guatemalan citizens, residents and diplomats for Guatemala can present either a negative Covid test or proof of full vaccination to be allowed entry.

Covid Situation In Guatemala

As with a number of countries across the globe, cases of the virus have been rising in recent weeks throughout Guatemala. According to the data provided by Reuters, the country is currently at 29% of its peak in case counts, with over 1,150 new infections reported daily on average.

Over the past year, Guatemala has been open to international travelers without strict entry requirements. While the Central American nation became the first country in Latin America to recognize vaccinated tourists in early 2021, unvaccinated travelers were allowed to travel to Guatemala if they showed a negative Covid test result.

Guatemala is currently at a Level 3 ‘Reconsider Travel' advisory according to the CDC due to cases of crime and rising Covid cases throughout the country.

Things To Do In Guatemala

From volcano hikes, to peaceful lake views and lazy beach towns, Guatemala has a little bit of everything.

The town of Antigua is arguably one of the most sought after destinations in Guatemala. Popular with backpackers, trekkers and adventure seekers, this walkable colonial town is surrounded by volcanoes ready to be hiked, not to mention the serene Lake Atitlan.

Volcan Pacaya is a nearby active volcano which is an easy/moderate hike. For a more intense experience. Volcan Acatenango is a more strenuous (but rewarding) trek that you can do as an overnight trip and stay one night on the mountain.

Just a 30-minute drive from Antigua is the capital, Guatemala City, where travelers can relax for a few days and recharge your batteries. Travelers can explore the cathedrals and markets in the center of town. Museo Popol Vuh, a well-curated museum filled with historical and cultural artifacts is definitely worth a visit.

If you're looking for some beach time, head to the Pacific coast to Puerto San Jose or Iztapa for unique black sand beaches and whale-watching opportunities. Head to the Caribbean coast to laid-back Livingston for tropical vibes where you can relax in a bungalow by the beach for a few days.
