As the winter draws in, are you looking for some winter sunshine? Hawaii has announced its welcoming tourists back from November 1st.
Hawaii started welcoming back domestic tourists earlier this year. But the Delta variant increased COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, forcing Gov. David Ige to state, “now is not the time to visit the islands.”
However, speaking at Konta Airport, Gov. David Ige says he wants to welcome tourists back to Hawaii as cases and hospitalizations continue to decrease.
Gov. David Ige said, “Because of this, it is now safe for fully vaccinated residents and visitors to resume nonessential travel to and within the state of Hawaii,”
“Beginning November 1, we want to invite and encourage fully vaccinated visitors and residents to travel for business or leisure, trans-Pacific, and inter-island.”
Although Gov David Ige asked travelers to stay away from Hawaii, he did not change the entry rules. But it’s unclear how many Americans canceled their trips to Hawaii from August to October after the announcement.
Despite welcoming back U.S domestic tourists, Hawaii has no plan for international travelers yet.
A statement from Ige’s office suggested Hawaii will have “an appropriate plan in place” before Nov. 8,” as the United States lifts travel restrictions for fully vaccinated international visitors.
The Entry Restrictions
Hawaii’s travel restrictions currently allow U.S travelers to skip the mandatory 10-day quarantine if they provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test or proof of full vaccination.
According to the island’s official government website, travelers need to upload their COVID-19 test result or vaccination record document to the online Safe Travels Hawai‘i program.
After you create your Safe Travels Hawai‘i account, you’ll need to enter your travel information, trip details, and other important information.
However, travelers wishing to bypass the quarantine requirement who are ages 5 and older will have to take a Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) from a certified Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) to skip quarantine.
Travelers must take the test no more than 72 hours before their flight departure. Once travelers have the negative test result, they must upload it to their online Safe Travels Hawai‘i account.
If travelers don’t upload the correct form to their online Safe Travels Hawai‘i account and have a hard copy in their hands when arriving in Hawaii, they will have to undergo mandatory 10-day quarantine on arrival.
The Current COVID-19 Situation In Hawaii
Hawaii has endured relatively low cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began thanks to its incredibly remote location and tough travel restrictions. That said, the Delta variant caused a wave in September, leading to a peak 7-day case average of 910.
The current 7-day average is 126, which is considerably lower than the case number 2 months ago. Hawaii has fully vaccinated 58.99 percent of its entire population, and it’s administered one dose to 77.67 percent of the population.
The Current COVID-19 Restrictions In Hawaii
At the current moment — unlike many parts of America — Hawaii still has COVID-19 restrictions. There is a vaccine passport in Oahu and Maui, meaning you’ll need a vaccine passport to enter bars, gyms, public events, and other establishments.
Since September 15th, Maui has required locals and tourists to show vaccination cards to enter indoor restaurants.
Mask mandates and social distancing remain in place throughout the state, and outdoor events — such as sports competitions and concerts — have a 50 percent limit on capacity.
Compared to the rest of the United States, Hawaii has more travel restrictions and COVID regulations within the state.
But the state is looking to drop these restrictions over the winter.
