More than a year into the pandemic, Covid-19 continues to wreak havoc to the travel plans of millions of travelers, and to the travel industry as a whole. With several holidays already lost to the pandemic, it seems Easter is set to join them, with Puerto Vallarta announcing this week that there are to be new restrictions put into place in time for Easter week. Here’s a closer look at what those restrictions are, as well as a re-cap of the travel restrictions currently in place for Mexico.

Puerto Vallarta Will Tighten Restrictions Over Easter – What Travelers Need To Know

Puerto Vallarta’s New Restrictions – Information For Travelers

The resort town of Puerto Vallarta is used to welcoming tourists in droves, but the prospect of doing so during the pandemic is a risk that those in charge are not willing to take. As a result, the city is to put a number of restrictions in place in order to minimize any potential Covid-19 based risks.

Ana Bárbara Casillas, a government representative for the state of Jalisco where Puerto Vallarta is located, stated that during Easter, “a significant mobilization of people is generated, and although the measures we have taken have worked, we need not to lower our guard”.

Four specific measures are being taken to ensure that cases continue on in their downward trend, rather than rise as a result of travel. The measures are:

  • increasing the number of tests that will be applied at strategic points
  • municipalities do not issue licenses for activities that generate crowds of people
  • reinforce sanitary filters on roads, airports, and bus stations
  • intensify the promotion of the use of the mask and activities at home

There are also several other restrictions in place in the town. Beaches are permitted to open only between 5AM to 5PM. Easter pilgrimages and processions are also not permitted, as the local government hopes to avoid large crowds from gathering, and instead virtual mass is being promoted. A further 287 officers from the Jalisco State Civil Protection and Firefighters Unit are also to be deployed during this period.

The hospitality industry is also putting in the effort to ensure the safety of guests is guaranteed. Hotel capacity is to be capped at 66%, whilst restaurants and bars may only open until 11PM. Hotels are following strict health and sanitary procedures, and those who register a body temperature above 37°C are not permitted to enter. Hand sanitizer is widely available.

Mexico’s Entry Requirements – What Travelers Should Know

Travelers from all countries arriving by air are permitted to enter Mexico at present, with visa requirements still in effect for the countries that require one. Regardless of port of origin, travelers do not need to take a Covid-19 test of any type prior to arrival. Given that many countries, such as the US and Canada, require a negative Covid-19 test to fly home, major tourism hubs in Mexico have the facilities in place to supply tests for travelers.

Puerto Vallarta Reopening To Tourists: Everything You Need To Know

Prior to flying to Mexico, travelers must fill in a Health Declaration Form that supplies a QR code that will be needed when landing in Mexico. There is no mandatory quarantine in place, nor is travel insurance required, but visitors are encouraged to carry medical insurance that covers COVID-19 while in Mexico. Each state has its own health protocols; Puerto Vallarta has made the wearing of masks mandatory in public spaces.
