Located by the Gulf of California and the state capital of Baja California Sur, La Paz is one of the best places to visit in Mexico. With many natural wonders, including an abundance of sea life, you will enjoy many adventures on your trip.
Visit the Beaches
Visit Espiritu Santo Island, which is a one-hour boat ride north of La Paz. This is one of the best things to do in La Paz, where you will enjoy this island with an impressive and rich marine life. It’s home to many marine species, including dolphins, whales, turtles, sharks, rays, and many more. This island was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1995, and once you see it for yourself, you will understand why. If you like to snorkel, this is the place for you. If you want to spend the night there, you can stay at Camp Cecil, which is the most beautiful and romantic Glamping location in all of Baja California. Spend two wonderful days surrounded by sea lions and unique turquoise waters. Another beach that is worth the one-hour drive is Balandra Beach. This breathtaking location is perfect for kayaking because motorboats are not allowed near the beach. You can rent kayaks, go to the inland mangroves, go out to sea, or explore the shallow bay. Be careful and look for stingrays hiding under the sand.
Swim with Whale Sharks
Even if you don’t land on any of the beautiful islands, you can cruise the Sea of Cortez and swim with the whale shark, definitely a must-do and a top-rated activity in La Paz. Whale sharks can measure 40 feet long, and they can be spotted from October through March in this region. It is a fantastic experience, but you should always follow the instructions of the tour guide. Even though they are harmless to humans, visitors must respect the policy of not touching this beautiful creature to protect its welfare. Book ahead of time because the number of visitors in the location at the same time is limited. Another option is to rent a catamaran and snorkel with these amazing animals. Guided tours for this adventure are available in English as well.
Whale Watching
Magdalena Bay is a stretch of land and a fishing village, and here you can experience whale watching like no other place in the world. In December, a great number of whales arrive at this location, and you can have a close encounter with these incredible creatures. This area, also known as Lopez Mateos, is where gray whales have migrated for thousands of years to give birth and nourish their calves. Once they are strong enough, they will make the journey to Alaska. The gray whale was an endangered species at one point, but its population has increased again. As a result, they have become used to humans, allowing for an intimate encounter as the magnificent whales even approach the boats and interact with tourists. This is a one-of-a-kind experience that is you simply cannot miss.
Stroll the Malecon
The Malecon is a 3-mile long promenade and a popular spot for locals and tourists. This beautiful path by the sea is perfect for strolling, going jogging, or simply watching the most amazing sunsets in Baja. Most days, you will find families or couples enjoying the view or making a stop at their favorite waterfront restaurant to enjoy the view. Bike rentals are also available to ride on the bike lane along the Malecon. This is the perfect place to absorb the atmosphere of this vibrant location.
Fine Dining at La Marina
A trip to La Paz would not be complete without a fine dining experience. The city has many renowned restaurants that will satisfy even the most demanding diners. Tres Virgenes is the top choice if you want an elegant atmosphere in an enchanting courtyard surrounded by trees and an exquisite ambiance. Its menu includes a fusion of traditional and modern cuisine; Ceasar salad, seafood risotto, sea snails, roasted bone marrow are just some trademark dishes. Azul Marino is another excellent option with fresh seafood caught daily and delivered to your table. Finally, for traditional Mexican breakfast, go to Maria California, to enjoy delicious food, live music, and a great atmosphere decorated with brilliant colored artwork.
La Paz has everything you can expect from an adventure in beautiful Baja California, Mexico. Beaches, marine life, fresh seafood, a picturesque and thriving Malecon, and cheerful locals. It has all the ingredients for an ideal and unforgettable vacation.
