Last Updated

It's true. Many countries are not open to having American tourists right now, but there still are some great options out there, especially if you have the time and freedom to isolate.

For months we have been reporting on all the countries that have now re-opened for American tourists, but since most of them require PCR testing to enter, a requirement that can be tough to get in the USA, our readers have been asking us:

What countries are open to American tourists with a 14-day quarantine?

Countries Americans Can Travel To WITH Quarantine

There are still a handful of countries out there that will allow tourists from the USA to enter, as long as they agree to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. This gives some American travelers a few additional options, especially those who can't seem to find PCR testing in their area.

Regardless of what country you decide to travel to, you should ensure you have the proper travel insurance that covers covid, especially during this uncertain time.

Slovenia

As of July 17, 2020, Slovenia has developed a ‘traffic light’ color-coded system that divides countries into different entry requirements based on risk, with Green, Yellow and Red lights.

The USA is classified as “Red” which means all arrivals must complete a 14-day quarantine upon entering Slovenia.

Update October 7: Due to a sudden surge in cases, Slovenia is asking all ‘RED' list arrivals to be essential travelers only. No tourism from ‘red' countries at this time.

Hungary

Much like Slovenia, Hungary also created a ‘traffic-light’ system that came into effect on July 15th. The USA is currently listed under ‘Yellow’, which allows entry with a 14-day quarantine.

The Ministry of Health says: Tourists arriving from Yellow category countries will undergo medical examination on entry. If a suspicion of infection is established, the foreign passenger is not allowed to enter Hungary. If no suspicion of infection arises, then the passenger is allowed to enter, but it is mandatory for him/her to go to home quarantine or the quarantine designated by the epidemiological authority for 14 days.

Important Update: As of Sept 1, Hungary is re-closing their borders to ALL international tourists until further notice.

Ukraine is allowing American tourists!

The Ministry of Health of Ukraine has developed criteria for “zoning” countries depending on the spread of COVID-19 per 100,000 population. They have created a ‘RED Zone’ country list and a ‘GREEN Zone’ country list. The USA is on the ‘Red Zone’.

The “Red Zone” countries are defined by having more than 55 active cases per 100,000 population. Tourists entering Ukraine from the “red zone” countries may still be permitted, but need to undergo quarantine for 14 days.

Haiti reopened their airport on June 30 and removed their state of emergency on July 27, 2020.

We have reached out for clarity, but concrete information is not easy to get. For travel purposes, assume there is a 14-day quarantine and hope to be surprised otherwise.

Georgia

Okay, the addition of Georgia to this list is a little unconventional, but may apply to many readers who are digital nomads.

Americans are currently banned from entering Georgia (only 5 nations are currently permitted!), HOWEVER, they just launched their “Remotely in Georgia” visa, which allows a stay of up to 1 year for: digital nomads, entrepreneurs, and people who can work from home.

Americans ARE allowed entry into the country under this program. The visa has no cost.
Applicants just have to show proof of income at least $2000 USD per month.

Can also confirm that Americans can visit South Korea. I’m currently in quarantine ($1500 in total) right now. For the phone call, they do want you to have some contact in Korea when you first enter, even if you are doing government-run quarantine. I had this issue but they let it slide for me, but I would suggest you book a hotel or Airbnb after quarantine and ask them if it is okay if the Korean officials can call them to confirm legitimate stay in Korea when you are at the airport for transit. (Also tip: the quarantine food gets old fast and is all cold, so bring like cup noodles or something).

Can an Americans enter Germany for special circumstances and if they agree to quarantine and have negative covid test? My significant other's father was tragically killed today and I would like to enter the country for the funeral and to support the family. I am U.S. citizen currently in Croatia as a tourist.

I'm sorry Rex, I don't have enough data to give you any advice with your very sensitive situation. You will have to email German border police to be sure if you can or not. Good luck

Can US citizens enter Romania? I’ve read conflicting sources. One says US citizens can enter Romania as long as they quarantine 14 days and another says US citizens can’t.

No they cannot

The only way is if you have a Romanian spouse, or another special circumstance like residency papers for Romania, etc.

Hi, thank you so much for all of the information. It is so helpful. Do you know if a US person arriving in the UK from the US needs to explain why they are travelling to the UK? My partner is planning on coming here for a week, and she is happy to self isolate for the entire trip, before going back to the US (we just want to spend some time together and are not bothered about tourism). Have you heard of many people arriving from the US being refused entry into the UK? Many thanks

Hi Dev! :) I am happy to report that most of our readers have had an almost 'too-easy' entry into the UK. Most were just asked about their passenger form and told to quarantine, and that was all. While I cannot say that will be the same for your partner, this is what my understanding is on the topic based on first-hand travelers. You can always check with UK border police or the UK consulate if you have any doubts, but from what I have seen, it should be just fine
