If you’re looking for some easy budget winter vacation inspiration, you’ve stumbled upon the right page. Travel over the past 2 years has been more expensive and complicated than ever, but there are still some great deals to be found in countries that are easy to access from the United States and Canada.
Below we have cheap vacation options out of major U.S. and Canadian airports, with all direct flights being under $100, getting you to paradise in under 3 hours. We’ve also taken entry requirements into consideration and aren’t mentioning any countries that have massive obstacles to enter.
We’ve got different destination ideas for departures out of New York, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver.
departing from:
Miami to:
Cartagena
from $100 on American
Cartagena, a coastal city in Colombia, only has proof of vaccination needed for entry.
Aruba
from $55 American
A 3-day PCR test, plus proof of insurance is needed
San Juan
from $37 on Frontier, $58 on Spirit, and $80 on American
San Juan doesn’t have any entry requirements for American travelers.
Punta Cana
from $72 on Frontier, and $86 on American
Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, is administering random breath tests on arrival for approximately 5% of arrivals, but otherwise, no other entry requirements apply.
Turks and Caicos
from $66 on American
Proof of vaccination, 3-day PCR test, plus proof of insurance is needed for entry
Miami has the most tropical winter vacation hotspots within a 3-hour radius. There are many more than what we’ve listed, but we've listed some of our top recommendations for winter 2022. Cartagena and Punta Cana are great budget-friendly destinations, while Turks and Caicos, San Juan, and Aruba are a little more off the beaten track for the average traveler, but all have incredible and unique offers for tourists.
New York City to:
West Palm Beach
from $59 on JetBlue
Domestic, no requirements.
Nassau
from $66 on JetBlue
The Bahamas requires only a 5-day antigen test for fully vaccinated travelers, and a 5-day PCR for unvaccinated.
JetBlue wins as the airline offering the best-priced flights out of NYC this winter to warmer destinations. New York City also flies directly to Bermuda in under 3 hours and under $100, but the entry requirements are still too intense with 4 total PCR tests.
Los Angeles to:
Puerto Vallarta
from $61 on Spirit, $93 on either Delta or Alaska
No entry requirements.
Cabo
from $61 on Spirit, $73 on either Delta or United
No entry requirements.
Both Puerto Vallarta and Cabo are in Mexico, which has no entry requirements at all. No testing, no quarantines, no proof of vaccination, just get on the plane and go. Mexico has always had the same entry requirements throughout the pandemic, making it a sure-bet in regards to booking your winter vacation without closure worries.
Dallas to:
Mexico City
from $46 Volaris, $51 on VivaAerobus
No entry requirements.
Belize City
from $85 on American
A 96-hour PCR or 48-hour antigen needed to enter. Proof of vaccination will bypass quarantine.
Tourists can fly from Dallas to Mexico City on Mexican low-cost airlines for almost nothing. If you want to break the budget by $13 you can fly on full-service airlines like American or AeroMexico starting at $113. Mexico City is also a great stepping stone for other incredible Mexican destinations.
Atlanta to:
Cancun
from $100 on Frontier
No entry requirements.
Montego Bay
from $90 on Frontier
3-day antigen or PCR test needed to enter.
Frontier can whisk travelers to beautiful Cancun, which has been one of the most popular destinations throughout the entire pandemic. Almost every hotel and resort in Cancun has on-site testing, making it easy for American tourists to obtain the antigen test they need to fly back home.
Toronto to:
Orlando
from $83 on Flair and Swoop
1-day antigen test plus proof of vaccination is required.
Calgary to:
Vegas
from $116 on Air Canada
1-day antigen test plus proof of vaccination is required.
Vancouver to:
Palm Springs
from $75 on Flair
1-day antigen test plus proof of vaccination is required.
Canadians definitely have fewer options when it comes to 3-hour flights under $100, but there are still a few ways to escape the bitter cold. Flair and Swoop are both awesome low-cost options that have been expanding their destinations for 2022.
If Canadians want to up the time-frame to 5 hours and make the budget to $250, more options will become available like: Cancun, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo (from Vancouver or Calgary) or Turks and Caicos, Dominican, Jamaica, and Cuba (from Toronto).
